I attended a talk at the University of Nottingham this week on "the city of the bees". What a fascinating evening it turned out to be.
The talk was part of the Friends of University Park activities, and the speaker was Sandra Hart.
She's obviously a passionate bee keeper and without any visual aids gave an interesting and entertaining talk. I think she had the men in the audience cringing a little at times as she spoke about the lazy male drones and how the workers are mostly female, but I don't think they minded too much as it still takes two to tango in the early stages of the hive life.
I think the information that surprised me the most was how the bees start off on one task and then instinctively know after a few days to be something else. Everything is efficient, no wasted energy, no wasted time. Nature really is marvellous. This wasn't a particularly light bulb moment for me but it does no harm at all for me to stop and think from time to time and try and appreciated and value my world that I take for granted all too much.
I'm going to find out more about bees now and be(e) kinder to them, they need our help!
